The Education Authority invited schools to take part in a Jubilee themed bake-off as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Mrs. Pearson, Head of Home Economics and Hospitality (HE), along with Miss Beckett, HE Teacher, hosted a House competition for pupils in Years 8-11 in the HE Department. Teams consisted of two pupils and boys were given the choice of what they wanted to make. Pupils needed to complete their bake within 2 hours and were judged on the following criteria:
Organization of table
Skills used
Time management
Presentation
Taste
Housemasters and tutors were on hand to help the pupils with clearing of used baking items and to wash up!
The bakes were judged by the Headmaster's wife Mrs. Robinson along with Mr. McNabb, Catering Manager. We asked Mr. McNabb about his impression of the event. 'I was surprised by the technical level the boys displayed', he repled. 'To be able to produce food of that level at such a young age was really impressive. There was also a lot of enthusiasm and a healthy level of competition! It was a pleasure to be involved'.
You can see all the dishes the boys prepared in our photo gallery. The overall winners were Jake and David, Year 8 (School). The judges noted how good the rise was on their sponge cake, the colour of the sponge, their time management and the overall taste of the cake. Congratulations Jake and David!
