As the British & Irish Lions prepare for their first test match of the 2025 tour, Campbell College proudly celebrates its recognition as a Lions Origin School, an honour that acknowledges the school’s contribution to one of rugby’s most iconic teams.

Our Lions Legacy

Campbell College has produced four British & Irish Lions, each of whom has left an indelible mark on the sport:

Reginald Edwards (OC 56) – Lion #109
A formidable Irish forward, Reg Edwards toured with the Lions in 1904 to Australia and New Zealand. He made 11 appearances, including two of the three Tests against Australia, and scored a try against the NSW Waratahs. He also featured in the sole Test defeat to the All Blacks.

Cecil Pedlow (OC 3614) – Lion #364
A multi-talented sportsman who also represented Ireland in squash and tennis, Cecil Pedlow made 13 appearances on the 1955 Tour to South Africa, scoring eight tries, including a crucial one in the first Test victory at Ellis Park. Known for his flair and versatility as a wing/centre, Pedlow’s Lions career peaked with a memorable performance in one of the most thrilling series in Lions history.

Ken Kennedy (OC 4169) – Lion #448
A highly respected hooker and medical doctor, Ken Kennedy toured with the Lions in 1966 and again in 1974. He played in both tours, earning four Test caps in 1966—two against Australia and two against New Zealand. On the 1974 Tour to South Africa, he was not only a key player but also served as the squad’s unofficial team doctor, running daily clinics and conducting blood tests to help players prepare for altitude. Kennedy’s dual role made him a standout figure in one of the most iconic tours in Lions history.

Mike Gibson (OC 4368) – Lion #460
Widely regarded as one of the greatest Lions of all time, Mike Gibson toured five times between 1966 and 1977, making 68 appearances (67 starts), scoring 22 tries, and earning 12 Test caps. He was a key figure in the 1971 series win in New Zealand and the unbeaten 1974 Tour of South Africa. A Cambridge-educated solicitor, Gibson was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame and remains a towering figure in Irish and Lions rugby history.

These legendary players began their rugby journeys on the fields of Campbell College, where a passion for the game and a commitment to excellence continue to thrive.

About Lions Origin Clubs and Schools

Lions Origin Clubs and Schools are part of the People. Place. Pride. campaign launched by the British & Irish Lions to celebrate the grassroots foundations of the game. Supported by Canterbury and Howden, the initiative recognises the clubs and schools that have played a formative role in the development of Lions players.

To be recognised as a Lions Origin Club or School, an institution must have produced at least one player who has gone on to represent the Lions. These organisations are featured on the Lions Origin Map, a digital archive that charts the journeys of players from their early days to the international stage.

Campbell College is proud to be recognised as a Lions Origin School, reinforcing its place in rugby history and its ongoing commitment to nurturing talent.

Supporting the Lions

As the Lions take to the field for their first test, Campbell College sends its best wishes to the team. We take great pride in our connection and the role our community has played in supporting the game over the generations.

Once a Lion, always a Lion.
