At the start of September, we were honoured to support the Irish Guards during two significant ceremonial parades marking the regiment’s 125th anniversary.

Founded in 1900 by Queen Victoria to commemorate Irish soldiers who served in the Second Boer War, the Irish Guards continue to serve across the UK and internationally. Their strong ties to Northern Ireland were celebrated through these anniversary events.

The first parade took place in Bangor, where the Irish Guards exercised the Freedom of the City for the first time. It was a historic occasion, with large crowds lining the streets to show their appreciation. Our pupils were invited to join the parade alongside members of the Army Cadet Force. The second event saw the Irish Guards parade from Campbell College to St Mark’s Church, Dundela, where their Regimental Colours were formally laid up, the first time in history that the Colours have been laid up on the island of Ireland.

Campbell College was the only Combined Cadet Force (CCF) contingent invited to take part, and our Bugles, Pipes and Drums was the only band present apart from the Irish Guards’ own musical accompaniment. It was a tremendous honour to be involved, and our pupils represented the College with professionalism, respect, and a deep sense of occasion. Their commitment and conduct throughout both events were outstanding, and they are a credit to our school community.
